Mildred and her sisters were the first to welcome me to Martha's Vineyard about five years ago when I traveled with a group of friends. We stayed in a house directly across the street from "the sisters". I arose early to walk downtown and explore. A few steps into the street, I heard a voice-"You need a hat!" It was the voice of 1000 grandmothers who had lovingly chastised me for my own good. Auto-pilot turned my neck to the voice and my voice said, "Maam?" I was looking at Mildred. I introduced myself and she said, "Welcome, but girl, you need a hat in this sun." I assured her that I would buy one downtown. Of course she was right. By the time I got downtown I felt the need for shade.
I've never forgotten my hat since.
Congratulations on a life well lived. Welcome to your celebration where you don't need a hat or nothing else!

In July, 1994, I parked in front of 6 Narragansett Avenue and immediately said good morning to the distinguished looking family of beautiful women, who were sitting on the porch of an exquisitely landscaped cottage named JATOMI, directly across the street. I could not have known that a friendship of 25 years was burgeoning when one of them remarked, “I see you’re from Connecticut.” They had been the first Black family to own a home on the very street where I own my home in Hartford.
I/we spent many, memorable hours with Millie and her sisters, enjoying a cold beverage, sharing news of the island, world politics, the comings and goings of The Obamas, and sometimes simply sitting in companionable silence catching the breeze while gazing out at the sea to the horizon from their pleasant, wrap-around porch. Their porch was their queendom, and food for thought was served daily, free of charge. The sisters dished out a magical blend of intellect, wisdom and straight-forward mother wit made to order
Millie’s life is celebrated, and her passing is mourned by 40 or so of the three generations of my family and friends from Boston, Maryland and Hartford who summered there with me, including Charlene and Retha Dixon, MD, Janice and David Waters, Eleanor and Russell Best and Nazaleem Smith from Boston, and Hartford residents, Debra Cato, Jacque Davis, Regina Dyton, Liston Filyaw, Theresa Freeman, Earl and Callie Gardner, Andre Keitt, LaShawn Middleton, Kerry Rhoden, Frances Sharp, my daughter, Neiima Edwards and my grandchildren Amina, Rodney, Russell and Autumn Skye, all of whom refer to the Vineyard as paradise!
Our sincere, heartfelt condolences to the family. .
